The history of Azojuano and Ajá, providing healing and opening paths

Ajá from Azojuano

Ajá is the Orisha of the whirlwinds or from the wild wind, a very powerful, arrogant and fighter-friendly minor Orisha, who should not be provoked. Jungle pattern, animals within him and herbal healer.

But it is also Ajá, supported by the deities of the Yoruba pantheon. He is closely related to the saltwater kings of the world, Olokun y Yemaya, but also with the one who cures plagues and diseases, the great Babalu Aye and also known as Azojuano, syncretized in the Catholic religion with the miraculous saint, Saint Lazarus.

It is also known as Ajá Babalú Ayé's broom, used in ceremonies to drive away evil and as a shaker, is a bundle of coconut or corojo palm rods adorned with snails.

Next, we propose the legend that illustrates how Ajá helped and supported Babalú Ayé on his way.

Patakí from Azojuano, the healer of diseases

This patakí tells that one day a boy named Azo was born in the land of Igba Ará Okete, with a strong character, which meant that he could not relate to anyone, for which he was despised by those who habitaban in that town.

One day Iku, death, found him and told him that from that moment on she would be his godmother, and would make him feel good among the living and dance among the dead. So Iku invited him to make a pact with him in order to teach him how to heal people.

Before long, the town was filled with diseases. People suffered deaths from disease and tragedy.

Many were those who begged obbatala to alleviate that difficult situation and the old Orisha listened to their requests. Thus, he summoned Iku and asked him what he could do to stop his attack and not send his emissaries Ano, Arun and Eyo to the town. Iku replied simply, that they should see Azo.

Azo manages to heal the people

Obbatalá then decided to go find Azo in the river to help him heal people. At his call, Azo came out into the waters dressed all in black, and immediately went with the old Orisha to the town to remedy the epidemic that caused so many deaths.

Thus, Azo healed each person and gained the respect of all, so much so that they bowed their heads when he passed.

The intervention of Ajá

But convinced of his powers, Azo decided to go through different lands curing people, so that they would respect and venerate him everywhere.

However, it was difficult for him to walk through the woods and through the grasses. That was when she appeared to him Ajá in the form of wind and ripped out a bundle of double braces for Azo to clean himself and push aside the weeds.

Azo very happy because he could reach other lands faster he exclaimed:

«I finally found a friend. In honor of you, Ajá"I will be called Azojuano."
