Dada Baldone: The Orisha who protects cribs in maternity wards

Obañeñe also known under the name of Dada Baldone he is a minor deity within the Osha.

This Orisha is in charge of protecting newborns, especially those born with curly hair.

The Orisha that protects newborns

The presence of this saint is found next to the cribs of the newborns in the maternity wards, from there it influences their health and the rapid medical diagnosis to try to correct any problem that may arise unexpectedly.

Because of this it is said that he watches over neonatologists whom he blesses with wisdom and intelligence.

As Obañeñe is a minor deity, he does not settle in the sacred ceremony of the Osha, this is usually represented using a pumpkin to which a crown of snails is placed.

This saint usually manifests as a short woman who wears a set of long skirt and white blouse, whose head is covered with a white handkerchief, sometimes wearing a matching apron and shawl.

Obañeñe is considered the Orisha of vegetables because she loves them, making them her main adimu.

When a pregnant woman wants her child to be born healthy and uncomplicated, she makes offerings to this deity made from legumes and vegetables.

The holy protector of newborns can also be offered fresh fruits such as:

  • The guava,
  • melon,
  • The plum,
  • The tamarind,
  • the handle and
  • the pineapple to name a few of these.

They are placed for nine days and later this adimu (offering) is delivered in the ceiba, where the ritual culminates.
