What is Daphnomancy? Divination by means of laurel leaves

Daphnomancy is the term with which the form of divination is identified carried out using the leaves and branches of the laurel to make pertinent predictions to the past, present and future of the consulted person.

What is the Origin of Daphnomancy?

Daphnomancy was practiced for the first time in the sanctuary of Delphi, dedicated to the god Apollo, a deity that was represented by the sun and symbolized sudden death, plagues and diseases, as well as the power of healing and of protection against evil forces.

Apollo was after Zeus the most revered god of antiquity.

When the priest or medium threw the laurel branches into the fire, the audience was silent in order to listen to the creaking of the plant.

Sometimes the answers offered were doubtful, so the process had to be repeated.

The chewed bay leaves were responsible for creating a link between the priest and the gods, so that Apollo would give them the answer he was looking for.

The answer was obtained at the impression of the medium, who was in charge of deciphering the hallucinations and offering a clear idea about the matter and from there making or not making changes in the life of the Apollo devotee.

In many parts of the world divination is still practiced using bay leaves, although it is worth noting that Europe and Asia are its main defenders.
