A novena is an exercise in devotion practiced in order to consolidate the faith towards a saint or to give light to a spirit.
The novenas addressed to the saints of the Catholic Church meet the requirement of:
- Have an extension of nine days, because Saint Jerome made it clear in the pages of the Bible that the ninth day would be the propitious one to replace the pain suffered under martyrdom with love and faith.

Third day of prayers to Santa Barbara in her novena
My most sweet Jesus, divine Spouse of the enlightened virgin and martyr Saint Barbara, whom your love inflamed, so that the lighted axes with which they embraced her virginal body, previously torn with iron combs, further kindled the inflamed burning of her loving breast :
