Note from my heart: I want to share with you, with much respect and love, that not all of Mama Tomasa's spiritualities are presented in the same way. Each medium may experience and feel it differently, depending on their path, their mission, and their spirituality.
What I tell you here about her—her story, her energy, her way of working—has been revealed to me by Mama Tomasa herself over many years of spiritual development, during my prayers, my silences, and my learning experiences with her. It is her way of expressing herself to me, and I honor her with every word. If you experience her differently, that is also valid, because spirits are profound, wise, and unique in their relationship with each of us.
An origin marked by love, slavery and ancestral wisdom
Mama Tomasa was born on August 15, 1840, on a hacienda in the Cienfuegos area, in the heart of Cuba. Her mother was a conga slave, and her father, the owner of the estate, was Spanish. Her name was María Tomasa de las Mercedes Gregorio, and it was given to her by her employers, as was customary in those days.
From a very young age, she helped with household chores, but what changed her life was her access to reading, something uncommon in her condition. She learned to read thanks to her owners, especially her father's wife, who held her in high regard, but her true spiritual and healing training came from her mother, who taught her the use of herbs.
The rebellious and righteous soul of Mama Tomasa
From a young age, Mama Tomasa displayed a strong connection to her African roots. She was interested in ancestral beliefs and practices and could not stand injustice. Her energy was so powerful that those who knew her deeply respected her, and those who opposed her feared her.
Her reputation as a healer grew, not only for her knowledge of plants, but also for the gift that had been with her since childhood. She healed with her hands, with her words, with her presence.
Music, the sea and its unique way of life
Music and dance were her escape. She loved attending Black dances, where they celebrated her roots, and there she stood out for her grace and elegance. She always wore blue with white trim, and the sea—which she knew from a young age—became her spiritual refuge.
She never married and lived 100 years of complete lucidity, never losing her ability to heal. After the death of her patrons, she moved to Havana, where she visited the Shrine of Our Lady of Regla for the first time, to whom she became deeply devoted.
Mama Tomasa's legacy lives on
Over the years, Mama Tomasa became a pillar of her community. Many came to her for help, and she always welcomed them with kindness, without losing her strong and fair character. Her presence was like a balm: she calmed, guided, and left a lasting impression.
Today, Mama Tomasa is a highly respected spiritual guide. If she's part of your spiritual life, if you've ever felt or dreamed of her, I invite you to call her, to speak to her, to listen to her. She's flirtatious, friendly, and very wise. Although she sometimes seems to be joking, her energy transforms without you even realizing it.
How do you know if Mama Tomasa is with you?
If you're drawn to the color blue, if the smell of the sea reaches you for no reason, if you dream of a sweet but strong woman who embraces you with her gaze and gives you unexpected answers, Mama Tomasa may be knocking on your spiritual door. Don't ignore her. Get to know her, listen to her, ask her how she wants you to accompany her.
