Athanasian Prayer: Finding God, Faith, and the Greatness of the Trinity

Athanasian Symbol

The Athanasian symbol It is a profession of faith attributed to the Bishop of Alexandria, Saint Athanasius.

This doctrine is collected in a prayer that shows the religious the way to faith and the salvation of the soul.

Through these prayers, God is recognized as the creator of the world, its virtues and the meaning of true devotion to the Savior.

This doctrine can be pronounced in particular situations, although it is really reserved for Easter and special events.

Athanasian Symbol: The way to reaffirm faith and meet God

Anyone who wants to be saved must first of all profess the Catholic faith.

For whoever does not observe it in its entirety and without blemish, will undoubtedly perish eternally.

And this is the Catholic faith: that we venerate one God in the Holy Trinity and the Trinity in unity.

Without confusing the people, or separating the substance.

Because one is the person of the Father, another that of the Son, and another that of the Holy Spirit. But the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one divinity, equal glory and eternal majesty correspond to them. What is the Father, such is the Son, such the Holy Spirit.

The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated. Immense the Father, immense the Son, immense the Holy Spirit. Eternal the Father, eternal the Son, eternal the Holy Spirit.

And yet they are not three eternals, but one eternal. In the same way, not three uncreated, not three immense, but one uncreated and one immense.

Likewise, the Father is omnipotent, the Son is omnipotent, the Holy Spirit is omnipotent.

And yet not three almighties, but one almighty. Similarly, the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God.

And yet they are not three gods, but one God.

Thus the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord. And yet they are not three Lords, but one Lord. Because, just as Christian truth forces us to believe that each person is God and Lord, the Catholic religion forbids us to speak of three Gods or Lords.

The Father has not been made by anyone, neither created nor begotten. The Son proceeds only from the Father, neither made nor created, but begotten. The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son, neither made nor created nor begotten, but proceeding.

Therefore, there is only one Father, not three Parents; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits.

And in this Trinity there is nothing before or after, nothing greater or less: for the three persons are coeternal and equal to each other.

In such a way that, as has already been said before, we are to venerate the unity in the Trinity and the Trinity in the unity.

Therefore, whoever wants to be saved must believe these things about the Trinity. But to achieve eternal salvation it is also necessary to firmly believe in the Incarnation of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

True faith consists in our believing and confessing that Our Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, is God and Man.

He is God, begotten of the same substance as the Father, before time; and man, begotten of the substance of his Most Holy Mother in time.

Perfect God and perfect man: subsisting on a rational soul and human flesh.

He is equal to the Father according to divinity; less than the Father according to humanity. Who, although he is God and man, are not two Christs, but one Christ.

One, not by conversion of divinity into flesh, but by assumption of humanity in God.

One absolutely, not by confusion of substance, but in the unity of the person. For as the rational soul and the body form one man, so Christ is one, being God and man. Who suffered for our salvation: he descended into hell and on the third day rose from the dead.

He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of almighty God the Father: from there he is to come to judge the living and the dead.

And when he comes, all men will be resurrected with their bodies, and each one will give an account of his own deeds.

And those who did good will enjoy eternal life, but those who did evil will go into eternal fire.

This is the Catholic faith, and whoever does not believe it faithfully and firmly cannot be saved. Glory to the Father ...
